Counseling Dietitian (Alberta)

As a dietitian with nearly 20 years of experience and mom of two active boys, I understand how challenging it can be to juggle it all while getting meals on the table that you feel good about—and that your family will actually eat! On top of that, diet culture and societal pressures to look a certain way often complicate our relationships with food and our bodies. This is why I’m so passionate about helping people build a positive relationship with food. My goal is to empower my clients to make food choices with confidence and enjoy the foods they love—without stress or guilt.

After graduating from the University of Alberta, I began my career in women’s health and have been fortunate to work in a variety of areas over the years. No matter what the role, my approach is always compassionate and judgment-free, drawing from both professional and personal experience. My oldest son has Celiac disease and ADHD, so I know firsthand the complexities of managing dietary restrictions and eating challenges. Over the years, I’ve gathered countless tips and tricks (through plenty of trial and error) that allow me to connect with clients on a deeper level, offering both empathy and practical solutions.

When I’m not working, you’ll often find me chauffeuring my kids to a hockey rink or baseball field and cheering them on from the stands. I also love staying active, whether it’s playing sports, going for a walk with a friend or trying out a new class. Creativity is another passion of mine, and I like challenging myself with hobbies like jewelry-making or pottery (spoiler: the wheel is harder than it looks!). And fun fact: I always start my day with coffee and a piece of chocolate—it’s my favorite morning ritual.

Counseling Dietitian (Alberta)

I chose a career that puts me in the business of eating! It's a good thing because my favorite topic is the joy of food and I love inspiring people to come along for the ride. I have more than a decade of experience helping clients manage their diet-related conditions, eat well and build a positive relationship with body and food. I am passionately aligned with the intuitive eating and HAES (Health at Every Size) principles and believe it's my life's work to empower people through this lens. I lead with relatability, humor and leave judgement at the door. We are all in this together!

I have spent my career working in the community in both a one-one-one and group capacity. I have extensive experience with diabetes management, heart health, gastrointestinal conditions, failure to thrive, pediatric nutrition, disordered eating, eating disorders, nutrition optimization, pre/post-bariatric surgery, building healthy habits and more. Some career highlights include public speaking for various organizations on a range of topics, developing impactful nutrition programs for my community and creating recipes and other resource material to meet personalized needs.

Now a little more about me outside of nutrition! I coach, play and watch my kiddos partake in sports including hockey, acro and softball. We also enjoy cheering on our local sports teams (some family members only come for the popcorn). My loves include biking, trash TV, piping hot coffee in the morning, time spent with friends, all the cheese, skiing, walks in nature, reading and yard work (kidding about that last one). But above all else, quality time with my family is my number one priority.

I am incredibly excited to be joining the CNC team and can't wait to get started!

Office Manager, Business Strategist, Marketing/Communications

Hi there! I’m the Office Manager for the Centred Nutrition Collective and Business Strategist for the practice. I have a background in marketing and communications management & graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and a Digital Arts Certificate. Since then I have worked in non-profit marketing and communications, dance school management and most recently as a newborn, family and brand photographer. I’m a lifelong learner and enjoy expanding my skills and knowledge on a regular basis.

I have two children and know first-hand the challenges of picky eating and the dinner time struggles it creates. Now that my kids are older and also love learning easy ways to nurture them while dashing around to sports & dance rehearsals. I love being part of a team that works to enable families to raise healthy, happy eaters.

Jessica Ferris, BSc. RD

Counseling Dietitian (Ontario), Mom of Three

My many experiences as a mom, a friend and as a pediatric dietitian has helped to shape my desire to support families in meeting their nutrition goals. As a busy mom of three boys, I understand the many barriers and challenges to feeding a family because I get challenged too. I strive to help families create a healthy foundation for feeding that supports our children to grow and become healthy adults with a healthy relationship with food. I really love being a part of our Centred Nutrition Collective team providing nutrition counselling in pediatrics and family nutrition.

I obtained my bachelor’s degree from Brescia University College and completed my accredited internship with the Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program (NODIP). My career started in homecare where I practiced for 10 years seeing both adults and then paediatrics in combination with running a paediatric private practice for 5 years. I have supported families with feeding their children from infancy to school-age, working through growth concerns, introducing solids, picky eating, expanding food variety, and more complex feeding concerns. While considering what we eat is important, I feel what is equally important is how we feed ourselves and our children. I look forward to supporting families in their feeding journeys wherever it may lead!

When time frees up on this crazy but fun parenting journey you can find me meal prepping the next batch of snacks, or trying to carve out some time for myself reading. You might even find me mountain biking on our local trials. As a family we love Friday night movie nights getting outdoors swimming, kayaking, fishing, or hiking. In the cooler months you can find us spending more time in the local hockey rinks.

Susan Sommerville, RD

Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, Counseling Dietitian, Blog Writer (Alberta), Mom of Two

As a mom of two passionate and unique children, I've experienced firsthand the challenges and joys of feeding kids. My son’s birth transformed my life, but it was my daughter who truly opened my eyes to the trials and tribulations that come with nourishing a child. Feeding kids is no easy task—I understand this deeply, and it fuels my passion for helping others learn to feed their children with both authority and compassion, while sprinkling in some fun!

My dietetic journey began with a focus on adult nutrition, where I explored into the complexities of gut health, created realistic eating routines, and developed sport nutrition programs for athletes. But whether I’m working with adults or children, my core mission remains the same: to help my clients and their families nurture a healthy relationship with food.

To further my goal of teaching food and body congruence, I became a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. This training allows me to guide individuals and families in embracing their natural body cues and enhancing their interoceptive awareness when it comes to eating. We are all born intuitive eaters! My aim is to support children in maintaining their natural attunement to their body’s needs, while also helping parents challenge outdated beliefs and rules about food that no longer serve their family.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me enjoying nature walks with my family, taking weekend trips to the ranch, or experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen—always with the help of my kiddos! Fun fact: I’m not a fan of most cheese, unless it’s melted on pizza! Not-so-fun fact: I was horribly sick during the entirety of both pregnancies—but it brought two amazing kids into this world and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Team Lead, Counselling Dietitian (Alberta & BC) Mom of Two

There are so many emotions wrapped up in nourishing ourselves and our families. From the excitement and nervousness of starting solids, the frustrations of picky eating, and the worry we have for our kids as they gain independence and explore their own relationship with food. As a mom to two school-aged kiddos (who are very different eaters) I too feel all the emotions that comes with feeding kids. This understanding fuels my passion as a pediatric dietitian to help families and kids feel confident and supported as they navigate the complexities of nutrition.

My nutrition journey started in Atlantic Canada with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nutrition from Acadia University and Mount Saint Vincent University. It was through this education that I was exposed to pediatric nutrition, as well as research on how families struggle with feeding their families. The beginnings of my dietetic career are rooted in food security and the social determinants of health. Understanding how systematically difficult it is to feed families, as well as personally with my own kiddos, I have a strong desire to wrap my clients in a big (virtual) hug and validate that feeding kids is tough.

When I’m not working, you may find me relaxing with a coffee and good book, but more likely I’ll be chauffeuring kids to and from activities and drinking that coffee on the go. My family loves to move, and they motivate me to keep up! Together we can be found downhill skiing and mountain biking, hiking to a gorgeous view, or taking dog walks in the neighbourhood. Fun fact about me – I loathe asparagus, unless it is cooked perfectly. I love quoting random movies and music in conversation. In a recent client conversation about a toddler tantrum the mom said “screaming, crying...” and I added “perfect storm”. IYKYK
